Big Boy Room Makeover

Big Boy Room Makeover

The time has come! Well, the time had to come, if I’m being honest. It was time for my baby to go into his own room and crib, which meant that our 3 year old was getting a big boy room! We wanted to keep the nursery a nursery, which meant we needed to turn our gust room into a big boy room for our toddler. Also, being in a 3 bedroom house, loosing a guest room is a topic for another day. My husband and I are still talking about what to do when guests come to visit because its really important to us for guests to be able to stay with us when they make the effort to come visit. We had a queen bed, but due to our impending move for grad school and needing to downsize from a 3 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom apartment (ahhhh that sounds crazy to say) we decided to get a twin bed so that when the boys need to share a room, there will be plenty of space.

Important criteria: We need to use a twin bed. Incorporate a lot of the decorations and wall art that we already have. Keep the same vibe and theme the same as the nursery so that when we combine rooms in 6 months, its a seamless transition. But at the same time, include things my son loves!

Execution: Because this transition happened around Christmas, I created a mood board partially for my own use, but also so I could send it to family who asked what to get our son for Christmas. Instead of toys (because we have soooo many already and don’t actually need more), I thought contributing to his boy boy room was the perfect alternative. This was the first room where I have put together a mood board and was intentional about each piece that went into it, and I have to say, I love how it turned out.

Theme: Since living in Arizona, I have quickly fallen in love with desert/southwest vibes. From the muted desert tones to cactuses, I love it. Our nursery has the same theme, but I also wanted to include what my son loves and make sure it has playful kid touches throughout. He loves construction vehicles, tools and firetrucks. I found different sheet options and let him pick which one he wanted, which ultimately was the construction sheets from Crate and Barrel. They are so cute and such good quality.

Come Christmas morning, we wrapped his door to his big boy room and seeing the joy in his face was everything. Shortly after, we moved his toy shelf and toys/books and it has become his own little slice of heaven. We never really played in his room when he was in the nursery, but we play in his room all of the time now! There is something about it that is just so peaceful and calm. The hard part about life in the military is as soon as you get comfortable in your house/location, it changes. As we get ready to move next month, I know that we will make a new home feel like home. The boys will share a room and I am so excited yet terrified at the same time for all the changes that will bring. But until then, we will enjoy his big boy room in this house.
